A FUN NIGHT IT WAS

Writer's picture: Barry OsborneBarry Osborne

The venue was set for a good night. This year, we had a Social Committee help organise the event, and what a fantastic job they did. The Committee was made up of:

  • Paul Graham, looking after the drinks,

  • Sue Vaughan, looking after the Music and dealing with the band,

  • Leah Israel is looking after the food, dealing with the caterers, and reminding Barry to take videos and photos.

  • Judi Campbell, Kerryn Bridgman, and Peter Keys took care of the decorations and door prizes and greeted members as they arrived.

The effect it had on members' involvement and the feeling it created was amazing. So, I could not thank the committee enough for their enormous work.

So the evening started with drinks of their choice, which included:

  • Sparkling Wine

  • Choice of two white wines

  • Choice of two red wines

  • Choice of beers, full strength or mid-strength

  • Choice of three spirits

Then, at 7 pm, the food arrived from our great caterers, Dux Gutz Catering from Paddington. Once again, they did a fantastic job and even looked after the special requirement members without an issue. Sue Vaughan and Leah Israel were helping to deliver the meals. It was terrific that you were not locked into a table seating arrangement, but food was delivered wherever you were at the time. The menu included:

  • Three entrees

    • Orange blossom chicken parcels

    • Persian beef dolmas with saffron yoghurt

    • Prawn And Chorizo Skewers

  • Two Mini Hot Box Meals, which were:

    • Shepherd's pie with smashed peas

    • Chicken Amatriciana

  • Deserts of a selection of mini tarts: lemon curd and meringue; dark chocolate and strawberry; vanilla and raspberries

Then, it was time to hand over to the band. We also organised a proper dance floor, as it is not great to dance on a carpet. Ben, our guitarist, has a wealth of experience working with the audience and giving them the music they want.

It didn't take long for the dance floor to be packed and for the members to let their hair down and be determined to have fun.

Then Ben took it upon himself to form a Conga Line, and everyone got involved.

This year, thank you to the committee; we added a new addition: over 12 different door prices. Many of the prizes were donated by Judi Campbell, but we also had the support of local businesses, which I would like to make a special mention of.

The Peach Cafe in Haig Road Auchenflower donated two $50 vouchers, one of which was won by Sylvia Smith, one of our newest members from Ireland. The other, sorry I forgot who it was. Check them out, Peach Cafe

it is a great coffee shop with excellent breakfasts and lunches.

They donated three $30 vouchers that Peter Carne won. Now, if you live in the Inner West or nearby, you would have come across this restaurant, considered one of the best Thai restaurants in Brisbane. It has been in the Inner West, Rosalie, and then Auchenflower for many, many years. You can be assured of a fantastic dinner there with excellent service.

We even had our Christmas Party at this restaurant a few years back and had a great time. Remember, in 2019, we held our Social Event there and had a terrific time. Well, Arvid supported us again by donating a two-course dinner for two people, which Julie Donaldson won. Many members raved about the dinner we had at this restaurant; if you haven't been, you must go.

So we are very fortunate to have companies like this supporting us on our end-of-year / Christmas Function, and you can repay them for their fantastic support by going to these cafes and restaurants. Take your friends and give it a try. I am confident they will be impressed.

So, thank you so much to all those members who attended our Christmas Party. From the comments, you had a terrific time. Those members who didn't attend and now regret it, make certain you attend next year. I am sure it will be better and bigger, so don't miss out again.
